Today we will discuss our syllabus for the History of Education from hunter-gatherer societies until the 21st century. Furthermore, we will explore the influence that education has had on our love lives, and ultimately, our spirituality.

*Bullet points are key concepts to note for possible inclusion on future quizzes.

SYLLABUS: ‘Love 101’, Instructed by the Zodiac Girls

Some of us learned about love at home, but many of us have been educated about relationships through trial, error and a lot of experimentation during our adult lives. In traditional public education, we’ve fostered an education primarily built on math, science and literacy. Although we spend most of our lives interacting with people, cultivating personal relationships, and building families, we are taught little to nothing about relationships and parenting during our 13+ years of schooling.

*As hunter/gatherers, we learned mainly through social interaction, play and exploration. Work and play were interchangeable and not regarded as separate activities.

* The invention of agriculture approximately 10,000 years ago resulted in forced labour and eventually transmogrified into medieval feudalism. For about 1,000 yrs, the education of children was about suppressing their will in order to make them more efficient labourers.

* In the late Middle Ages and more prominently in the Renaissance, apprenticeship was becoming more available, but most were still not privileged enough to partake in this opportunity.

* From the 16th-19th centuries, compulsory education became a more acceptable concept after Martin Luther promoted public education as a religious duty during the Protestant Reformation. The rise of Protestantism in the 16th century and beyond also brought about an increase in public education, particularly in Germany where the religion originated.

* During the 19th century, machinery of the Industrial Revolution resulted in a decreased need for labour and in increase in compulsory education. Once child labour laws were in effects in certain countries, the advantages of public education spread even more.
But the emphasis was still on labour and duty. Employers in various industries perceived schooling as a way to create better workers.

* From the late 19th and into the 21st century, public schools became more secular, but the temporal structure still prepares students for the eventual standard work day (6 hours for children, and someday, 8 for adults).
School gradually replaced fieldwork, factory work and domestic chores as the primary “job” for many children. A minimal amount of play has been integrated back into early years of schooling, yet contemporary children learn a distinction that hunter-gatherers never knew: the difference between work and play, and approaching learning as work, rather than a creative and spiritual process of natural discovery guided by impulses and intuition. This can make it challenging for those of us who are still striving to find work that we love, because we have to overcome the thinking ingrained into our subconscious minds from an early age that work and fun are inherently separated, which they don’t necessarily have to be.

*In the 21st Century, many courses and schools are creating an online presence. Additionally, many online courses such as Coursera offer peer grading or self-grading. This means that the educational cycle may be coming full circle from the hunter-gatherer times when learning was more self-directed, creative and spontaneous. Hopefully with increased independence encouraging a penchant for inventiveness and creativity, students can once again integrate learning with fun! Education lost some of its inspiration and spirituality along the way with western civilisation’s tendency to emphasise logic, rational thought, labour, and duty over love. Fortunately, there will be (and this is where the psychic channeling comes in!) a newfound freedom of choice in how students wish to be schooled in the future, which means we all get to do more of what we love. Creativity is an act of love which brings us closer to ourselves, to a higher source, and ultimately, to a connection with one another.
