Trying a new relationship or a different career is risky to the unconscious mind because it doesn’t know if we will survive something we haven’t tried before.

For instance, a healthy relationship can feel threatening if we didn’t experience one before, and whatever we perceive to be a threat to our survival, even if it’s positive, triggers the reptilian part of our brain and makes us go into fight or flight. If you’ve ever been in a positive, mutually loving relationship where your loved one suddenly disappeared or broke up with you, it’s possible that a healthy partnership was not something their unconscious mind had experienced before. It’s hard for anyone to change because our drive to survive conditions us to stick with what we know. But with willingness and a little action, a metamorphosis is not only possible, it’s inevitable. As an additional bonus, within 30 minutes before going you go to bed is a time when the gateway to the unconscious mind is opening. When you can access the unconscious, it becomes more possible to replace old thoughts with new ones. If you prefer to do self hypnosis by writing rather than speaking, try recording your affirmations in a journal before you go to sleep. The most effective technique for writing affirmations is in handwriting, because cursive is an ideomotor response directly connected to the unconscious mind. And the more you can access the unconscious, the better chance you have of changing your life.

While self hypnosis can be beneficial, the most effective and lasting technique is to be hypnotised by a professional. A knowledgeable hypnotherapist can use techniques that you can’t do on your own, methods that bring you to a deeper state and bypass any resistance that the self hypnotist may encounter. She can also upgrade your unconscious software by locking in suggestions more enduringly. And the longer new suggestions last, the more likely you are to consistently see the changes you want to have in your life. Within 30 minutes before going to bed, think to yourself (or write this in a journal, but in cursive), “Universe (or Great Spirit, Higher Power, Spirit of Life, Mother Nature, or whatever you believe in) thank you for bringing me a romantic partner who is available in every way and compatible with me in every way: physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. I love that s/he’s so (__________fill in the blank. Examples: consistent, reliable, trustworthy, trusting, honest, loving, in love with me, caring, gentle, thoughtful, kind, understanding, attractive, intelligent, witty, fun, stable, that we share the same beliefs, that he has integrity, etc.).”

Keep doing the affirmation until you believe it is going to happen. If you get into doubt, go back to doing the affirmation until you feel the faith that love will come to you. There are many reasons why it works, one of which is that other people subconsciously live up to or down to our expectations of them, so those who can meet our expectations will tend to gravitate toward us.

You can rewrite the affirmation by adding words and phrases that have personal meaning to you. The purpose of this self hypnosis exercise is to build faith in finding that career you want and/or pursuing a life purpose. Once you have the faith, you don’t need to keep using the instant self hypnosis. But if you have doubts again, it will help to repeat the self hypnosis. Faith will keep you motivated to persevere as you take actions toward achieving your goals.

You can write your own affirmations on any topic, depending on what you are looking to create in your life. The definition of ‘affirm’ is “to state or affirm positively“*, so a positive tone works best. In order to make this exercise most effective, choose words that have meaning to you. The more you resonate with the words in a affirmation, the more likely it is that your unconscious mind will be open to accepting suggestions.

If you like to work with guides and angels, you can also choose a being to further empower your affirmation. If you feel connected to nature as a source of spirituality, maybe something like Mother Nature, Mother Earth, Great Mystery, Universe, or Cosmos speaks to you. Do you have a favourite saint or angel? Perhaps Archangel Raphael, Archangel Michael, or St. Francis will work for you. Do concepts and philosophies interest you more than spirits? You can address your affirmation to energies and concepts such as Higher Consciousness, Love, or Spirit. It can work whether you choose one guide or have a team of them to strengthen your suggestions. By the way, you don’t have to invoke a guide in order for affirmations to work. Guides are only a helpful addition if it’s something that feels right to you.

Visualisation

Some of us visualize, some of us imagine, and some of us connect with feelings when we are in a state of self hypnosis. All of these are equally effective senses for the purpose of self hypnosis. If you prefer to work with a combination of feelings and visuals, you can further strengthen your unconscious programming by adding in a picture or emotion. You might want to pick one feeling or image in the first few self hypnosis sessions, as the simpler it is, the more likely you are to follow through on an exercise.
