On our previous episode of Zodiac Divas, we spoke with actress April Rose from the upcoming film Grown Ups 2, who has also served as an emergency room crisis counsellor for victims of sexual assault. We also discussed what it’s like to seek help for those who are experiencing a crisis in any form. All of us have encountered one type of crisis or another. It’s part of the human experience. A crisis is basically an event or series of events where a person’s coping mechanisms are no longer working. We may panic, going into fight/flight mode, and either run from a situation or resist the change. If you are a psychic reader and find that a client is coming to you and their crisis is beyond the scope of your experience or expertise, it is advisable to refer them out to a physician, psychologist, crisis intervention hotline, or all three. Once they have explored these avenues, perhaps you can give them additional insight from a spiritual perspective, which may supplement the healing process.
One of the most effective methods for helping someone to cope with and recover from a crisis is reflective listening, such as “What you want me to hear is _______(repeat back what they said or say it in different words)____. Is that right?” Let them know that you are hearing and understanding them. There are many hypnotherapy techniques for dealing with crises, such as issues of illness, mourning, violence, and financial setbacks. In addition to hypnosis, outside help from licensed physicians, psychologists, support groups, and reflective listening, we’ve listed some hotlines as resources for a time of crisis. Hopefully you will never need them, but feel free to pass these numbers along to a friend. The following hotlines are provided for the U.S., but please google the numbers of these hotlines in your own home country:
Sexual Assault Hotline: (574) 254-7473
