Today we travel back in time to about a month ago. February, 2016, when many viewers were wondering: what was New Jersey Governor Chris Christie thinking when he decided to drop out of the presidential race and endorse candidate Donald Trump?
It’s the look, it’s the look…the look of shock…right after Trump told Christie he could forget about the deal they made.
Christie was planning to stay in the race longer and fight it out despite a poor performance in New Hampshire. One day in February while he was still in the race, he got a call from Trump himself. The following is a transcript of what I picked up on in my channeling session.
Christie: (sounding irritated) I’m listening.
Trump: (while having his nails filed) Look, if you stay in I’m gonna fight this thing out and I will slaughter you, I swear, it will make you look so bad. But I have something better that I think is gonna work for both of us. Its gonna work out beautifully. Now just stay with me here on this, ‘cuz you’re gonna like it so much. You’re not gonna believe how much you’ll like it. (beat) I’ve got the numbers okay? I’ve got the votes, everybody’s saying I’m gonna win. I am gonna win. But I need somebody to work with me who’s been in politics. (pause) So I have a proposal for you which I really think you’re gonna like. If you drop out now-
Christie: (indignant, almost laughing) What?
Trump proposes a deal to Christie
Trump: -just listen! (shooing away manicurist) I’ll make a deal you are not going to believe, okay? It is the deal of a lifetime. You’re never gonna get a better deal than this. You get to work with me, at the top of my cabinet, in fact you can be THE Vice Presidential candidate. And I’m going all the way to the top, and I’m gonna take you with me. I’ve got a lot of other people wanting to be in that position, people are calling’ me every day asking if they can be a part of it’s going to be the thing every politician’s gonna want to do more than any other job in this country. But I chose you and I’m offering it to you first, so all I need you to do is to drop the race, you know is over with anyway, save yourself a little embarrassment, and come out of this thing on the top. I’d just need you to give a few words to show everybody you’re on my side, you’re a part of my team.”
Christie dropped out sooner than he would if he hadn’t gotten that call and that promise. And the moment before the cameras rolled on the day that Christie officially announced his endorsement for Trump’s candidacy, Trump moved away his microphone, leaned over, and whispered in Christie’s ear: “You know that part about havin’ you as my VP? I thought about it and, uh, (shaking head, making face) it’s not gonna work.”
The cameras rolled and Christie was already being filmed. What you’re seeing in Chris Christie’s endorsement face that so many have speculated about it is shock and the processing of information. What you hear in his voice when he steps to the podium is disappointment-in himself, in Trump, and in the whole political system. Christie’s not out of the picture yet, as Trump will continue to go back and forth on promises (“Y’know, I thought about it again and…”).
The question is, has Trump since made the same call to any other candidates? And why did he feel the need to tell Christie his plans just as he was about to get his endorsement?
