While most of the Oscar wins this year will go to a musical comedy, many recognised performances will be for dramatic characters from devastating, artfully rendered films such as Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight. *Spoiler Alert!*

Emma Stone ascends to the stars with an Oscar nomination and win for her endearingly comical and simultaneously touching role in this year’s hit musical LaLa Land

Casey Affleck is predicted for a Best Actor win to honour his haunting, naturalistic, tragically memorable portrayal of the misfortunate Lee Chandler

Best Picture: LaLa Land (If LaLaLand is remembered in future years as The Critic’s Choice, Moonlight will be noted as ‘The People’s Choice’).

Best Director: Damien Chazelle, LaLa Land

In Oscar Predictions 2017, Viola Davis will win Best Supporting Actress for a dynamic, believable portrayal of Rose Maxson in the cinematic adaptation of August Wilson’s stage play Fences

Best Actress: Emma Stone, LaLa Land

Best Actor: Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea 

Best Supporting Actress: Viola Davis, Fences

Best Supporting Actor: Mahershala Ali in Moonlight

Best Original Screenplay: Kenneth Lonergan, Manchester by the Sea

Best Adapted Screenplay: Barry Jenkins, Moonlight (Fences is a close second in this category, and would win a silver medal if Oscars were offered as Olympic medals).

Mahershala Ali wins in an upset for his sensitive performance as the sympathetic, paternal, impossibly conflicted crack dealer Juan in Moonlight

Best Film Editing: LaLa Land

Best Costume Design: Madeline Fontaine, Jackie

Best Production Design: LaLa Land

Best Soundtrack: LaLa Land

Best Song: “City of Stars”, LaLa Land

Best Documentary: O.J.: Made in America

Best Foreign Film: Toni Erdmann

Best Animated Feature: Zootopia

In future movie news, expect to see more magical realism in films over the next couple of years. The next few years will also bring some Spanish language films that are released in the U.S. with English subtitles and take off as box office hits, signifying a trend toward mainstream popularity of foreign films.
